Cleared Hot! – Book Review

Having served as the webmaster for the USMC Combat Helicopter Association since 1997, I’ve had the privilege of familiarizing myself with countless members, squadrons, aircraft, stories, and the intricate web of terminology and bases that weave the fabric of Marine Corps aviation history. Marion Sturkey’s “Bonnie-Sue” set a high standard for educational reads in this genre, and “Cleared Hot” by Bob Stoffey certainly rises to the occasion with equal vigor.

“Cleared Hot” transported me back to a time and place I never personally experienced, offering a vivid window into the era of the Vietnam War. Although I was stationed on a helicopter base in the early 80s, I was too young to witness the conflict firsthand. Nonetheless, my fascination with the stories and deep respect for those who served there made Stoffey’s narrative particularly compelling.

Stoffey prefaces his book with a candid comment: if you were there and saw things differently, write your own book. This sentiment underscores the uniqueness of each pilot’s experience and the subjective nature of recounting history. In my discussions with other VMO-2 pilots who were in Vietnam, I’ve come to appreciate that no two stories are identical. Each one offers a distinct perspective shaped by personal experiences and memories.

“Cleared Hot” excels in immersing the reader into the milieu of Marble Mountain Air Facility and the skies over Vietnam. Stoffey’s meticulous attention to detail ensures that even those unfamiliar with military aviation can follow along effortlessly. The progression through different phases of his tours, from flying the UH-34D to the OV-10 Bronco, provides a comprehensive understanding of the life of a VMO-2 pilot during the war. The stories are not just engaging but are also instrumental in painting a vivid picture of the critical role these pilots played in supporting ground troops.

One of the book’s greatest strengths is its ability to convey the essence of Marine Corps aviation. The helicopter and Bronco pilots were pivotal in providing close air support to the grunts on the ground, a mission that lies at the heart of Marine Corps operations. Stoffey’s narratives encapsulate this core principle, offering readers an authentic glimpse into the camaraderie, challenges, and triumphs that defined their missions.

“Cleared Hot” is a testament to the bravery and dedication of the Marine aviators who flew in Vietnam. Stoffey’s storytelling not only honors their legacy but also educates and inspires future generations. For anyone interested in military aviation history or seeking to understand the Vietnam War from a pilot’s perspective, this book is an invaluable resource.
